What is a Labyrinth?
The Labyrinth is an intricate circular
pattern which one walks while meditating.
Unlike a maze, a Labyrinth is a walking
path that always leads to the center and
out again. This ancient sacred symbol
of unity and wholeness can be found in
many cultures and religious traditions
throughout the world.
In our Catholic tradition during the Middle
Ages in Europe, pilgrims who were not
able to journey to Jerusalem walked the
Labyrinth on a symbolic pilgrimage. One
of the most well known Labyrinths is
in Notre Dame Cathedral of Chartres in
France. The Linwood Labyrinth design is
based on the 11 circuit Chartres Labyrinth.
The meandering pathway in the circle is
a metaphor for the journey of life. The
cross that bisects the circle can be seen
as a symbol for Christ in the world. The
sacred space of Labyrinths welcomes
and embraces all.
