QUILTING BY THE RIVER
"Piecin' a quilt's like livin' a life…the Lord sends us the pieces, but we can cut 'em out and put 'em together pretty much to suit ourselves, and there's a heap more in the cuttin' and sewin' than there is in the caliker…"
Aunt Jane of Kentucky, 1898, Eliza C. Hall

What could be better…being in beautiful, spiritual place, being with wonderful people, and being able to quilt!  This workshop/retreat will be a mixture of quilting and prayerful reflection and renewal.  It will be a time away from our busy lives where we can be in a circle sewing and have quiet time for reflection.  It will be a time to inspire and be inspired by what each of us brings to the circle.  Each day there will be teaching sessions of the various techniques with the option to apply the techniques on different projects.  Beginners, experienced, machine and hand-quilters are welcome.  Feel free to bring an ongoing project, or begin one here at the riverside.  A suitable project for beginners will be a splitrail.

COME AND SEE WEEKEND
How is God inviting me into my future?  Where is God in my life?  If you have been considering a life of service in the Church as a religious sister, come spend a weekend with your God, yourself and other women who are asking these questions on the journey.  We will spend some time listening, sharing, and learning what this experience might mean for us and getting to know the Sisters of St. Ursula and their ministries.  There will be time for personal prayer and Eucharistic liturgy together.

SPIRITUAL DIRECTION: FEEDING THE SOUL
Gratitude can turn a meal into a feast.
In living and growing as spiritual directors, we are invited to goodness, on-going conversion, and compassion.  These experiences feed our souls and the souls of those we encounter in spiritual direction.  Life is dependent upon recognizing life-moments, accepting the goodness that is offered and witnessing life-giving moments in others’ stories.  In conversion, we find ourselves in an eternal moment of birth, of being new again.  Goodness brings patience and wisdom to the task of growing.  As we allow ourselves to live fully our own small space of life, we are stretched to the wide world beyond ourselves.  As we grow in compassion for ourselves, the angle of compassion for others becomes wider.

This is a SILENT, contemplative retreat for spiritual directors and others in the helping professions to reflect on and explore their experiences of growth and deepening in the spiritual life.  There will be guidance for prayer, quiet time for prayerful reflection, as well as the opportunity for group sharing.

YOGA AND THE ART OF RELAXATION
Come rest, relax, rejuvenate, and have FUN through the exploration of yoga, and experience yoga nidra (the art of deep relaxation).  The heart of yogic teachings lies in the belief that a self-fulfilled person is a healthy person, free from dis-ease caused by stress and improper living habits.  The practice of yoga is designed to lead the person to an ever-increasing knowledge of herself/himself and the needs of her/his body and mind in order to achieve and maintain good physical and mental health and spiritual harmony.

Relaxation is a skill that is vital to life in the 21st Century.  We will utilize periods of silence to discover and listen to that deeper voice inside.  We will also experience the connection of the mind, body, heart and spirit.  This workshop is for the new and curious about yoga to the experienced yogis and yoginis.  Please wear loose, comfortable clothing and bring a journal and a mat or beach towel.

LENTEN RETREAT: CALL TO HOLINESS
St. Irenaeus said, “The glory of God is the human fully alive.”  From this perspective, the weekend retreat will examine aliveness of soul, openness to the experience of the holy, releasing transformative Divine energy and healing old images of holiness still embedded in the psyche.  This will be a SILENT retreat, with quiet, personal time to reflect on stirrings of the soul.  There will be opportunities for individual spiritual direction throughout the weekend offered by a team of spiritual directors.

ART-JOURNALING: A WAY OF PRAYER AND A HOLISTIC JOURNALING TOOL
This weekend will combine led journaling experiences with times for silence and community, in the beauty of the Linwood landscape.  We will engage in prayerful journaling using a process that combines simple art materials and writing within a meditative context.  Emphasis will be on the practice of contemplative gazing, with its potential to deepen our appreciation of God’s unique creation – ourselves included!  Optional gentle stretching exercises will help focus the embodiment of this holistic process.  Ways of noticing the present moment, and ways to continue the journaling process will be presented.  No art experience needed for this non-verbal/verbal approach.
Please bring a journal.  Other materials will be provided.

PSALMS AND COMPASSIONS
Immediately following his return from a student service project in Mexico, Fr. Tim Brown was diagnosed with colon cancer.  He turned to the Book of Psalms as a source of strength throughout his illness and recovery.  Explore the language of the King James Version of the Psalms in prayer.  Using his book, Psalms and Compassions, we will discover how we can enter the Psalms as we enter great poetry, no matter who we are or what we believe.  The vivid imagery provides a great deal of comfort and can be a vehicle of deliverance.  Perhaps those journeying through cancer or accompanying a loved one through cancer would find consolation in this weekend.
Fr. Brown wrote a companion volume, Psalms and Consolations, turning again to the Psalms as a way to find solace and work his way through bereavement and grief.
